Founded in 859, Al-Qarawiyyin is recognised as one of the oldest continuously operating universities in the world. The mosque and library are not open to non-Muslim visitors inside, but the surrounding lanes of the medina give a real sense of its scale and importance to the old city.
It sits deep inside Fes el Bali, so plan to walk in from a medina gate rather than trying to drive close to it.
