Oujda's old town is enclosed by defensive ramparts dating back to the 12th century, rebuilt several times since as the city changed hands between different ruling dynasties. Inside, the medina is smaller and quieter than those further west, with everyday markets rather than a tourist-focused souk.
Evenings are the liveliest time to walk the medina and the streets just outside it, once the day's heat has passed.
